On Being Martha Wehrle

I never met anyone who didn't like and love this woman. I know of few female politicians who didn't want to be just like her. Martha Wehrle was one very special lady. All of us have a Martha Wehrle story or two that we will treasure. For most, she is one of the first people we called when contemplating a run for office, and one of the first to congratulate us on the good job she thought we were doing after we did win.

Martha made everyone comfortable. Her warmth and charm were infectious. Oddly enough she made us want to be better and do better for the state of West Virginia and for our own little communities. She loved to laugh – mostly at a clever turn or phrase or good natured wit. She was smart, elegant, quietly determined and very effective. Her passing is sad because rare people like Martha Gaines Wehrle should live forever.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the University of Charleston Rotunda . Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthews Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 36 Norwood Ave., Charleston, WV 25314, or to a West Virginia charity of your choice.

Cards may be sent to:
The Family of Senator Martha Wehrle
1440 Louden Heights Rd
Charleston, WV   25314-1952

Support our Nurses Rally

4 pm ~ November 10th
Beckley, WV
Across the street from Appalachian Regional Hospital (behind Beckley Pharmacy).  There was a rally and candlelight vigil held last Thursday at the same location, sponsored by supporting doctors at the hospital.  There is much public support of the nurses, as one of the main issues that the nurses are striking over is patient staffing levels.

Bring your union banners and signs; wear your union shirts and hats! Nurses in West Virginia and Kentucky have been on strike for nearly a month! They need our help!!

The nurses are on strike because of the negative treatment by ARH management and allowing and promoting unsafe staffing for patients.

Hospital administrators refuse to address pay raises, mandatory overtime, and staffing ratios with the nurses.

Replacement nurses have already been hired by the hospital administration.

Please take action by contacting the President/CEO of the Appalachian Regional Health Systems and telling him to negotiate a fair contract with the nurses.

Please consider making a donation to the ARH nurses by clicking here.
