What About McCain's Pastor Problem?

Source: Editor & Publisher, March 20, 2008

Pastor John Hagee ENDORSES JOHN MCCAIN for President
While news media have focused on Barack Obama's pastor Jeremiah Wright, little attention has been paid to the endorsement of Republican presidential candidate John McCain by controversial Texas televangelist John Hagee. Hagee has voiced extreme anti-Catholic, anti-Jewish and anti-homosexual views.

In a September 2006 interview on National Public Radio, Hagee reaffirmed his view that Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment against New Orleans for hosting a homosexual parade. Hagee has also said that the Jews brought the Holocaust upon themselves by "turning away from the true God." He referred to Catholicism as a "false cult," and said the religion contributed to Hitler's anti-semitic views.

When Hagee endorsed him, McCain said he was "proud" to have the pastor's support. More recently, McCain has been working to distance himself from Hagee's inflammatory comments.

From Speaker of the House

Nancy Pelosi
Here's what you and I can't let happen. We can't allow the tension and pressures of a spirited Presidential contest to spill over and harm hard-working Democratic candidates running to strengthen our Democratic majority in the House.

Throughout the Presidential nominating process, I have been so proud to watch Democrats turn out in record numbers and demonstrate enormous grassroots energy. And soon we will have an exciting presidential nominee who will make our entire party proud.

She or he will lead our energized and united Democratic Party in the larger fight against John McCain, and his plan for 100 more years of war in Iraq. Now is the time to capitalize on the excitement that is sweeping the nation to ensure that our next President has a strong Democratic majority in the House to work with as we undo the damage from President Bush's failed economic policies.

2008 Election -- What Can You Do?

  1. Register To Vote – an individual can go to a site (click to see) on the Secretary of State’s web site and register to vote or update his or her
    registration.
  2. Know Your Candidates – The West Virginia Secretary of State’s office has a web site that lists the candidates seeking election in May 2008.  Please click here to search this site.
  3. Donate To A Campaign – an individual is allowed to provide a personal
check (from $1 to $1,000) to a candidate for statewide office or the
Legislature.  An individual may also provide a personal check (from $1 to $1,000) to any number of political action committees, many of which are
affiliated with chambers of commerce and business trade organizations in West Virginia.
  4. Help A Candidate – Individuals may provide their time to help a candidate with his or her campaign activities or needs.  Among the activities a person may do for a candidate are hosting a coffee with neighbors, putting up yard sign, helping with mailings, making phone calls or anything that will be helpful.
  5. Write a Letter To Your Newspaper – Individuals can write a short letter of support for a candidate and send it to a local newspaper.  This is a good way to help get publicity and generate support for a candidate.

Dear Friend,

I believe more strongly than ever that Americans intend to go to the polls this year and vote for candidates who are determined to bring real change to America.

Working families are looking for leaders who will fight for their hopes and dreams.

Those families have had the rug pulled out from under them. Tax cuts for the wealthy have weakened our social safety nets, leaving children and senior citizens to twist in the wind.

This is a pivotal moment in our history together. We have an opportunity to end a decade of policies that have stroked the wealthy and strapped the worker. Working Americans need Anne Barth in Congress, and I need her in Washington to help me continue to fight to protect our Constitution, and to expand economic opportunity for all West Virginians.

That is why I am writing to you today and asking you to make a contribution to the Anne Barth for Congress campaign.

Your friend,

The 2008 Health Care for America Survey results are in.

Please take a moment to read the full survey results and health care stories. Learn how working families can win secure, high-quality health care for all in 2009 if we make the 2008 elections a mandate for health care reform.

Today Chairman Nick Casey issued the following press release responding to a lawsuit filed by an out-of-state conservative special interest group seeking to overturn WV election laws. The Center for Individual Freedom, an Arlington, Virginia based group, wants to overturn our laws so that they can spend unlimited amounts of money on the State Supreme Court race without having to report the sources of their contributions.
